Thinking Architecture

Many of the essays collected in "Thinking Architecture (Original 2nd Edition)" have been translated into Chinese and published in domestic architectural journals. Instead of using the static tense "thought," "Thinking" refers to the dynamic process of thinking, which Zumthor uses here to refer to the ongoing process of reflection. The carefully selected photographs demonstrate the contemplative quality of Peter Zumthor's architectural thinking, which is characterized by the beauty of materials, the precise modeling of scale, the purity of abstract composition, the pleasure of perfect detail, and the dynamic connection between architecture and nature. Zumthor's architecture constrains the color range to the subtle differences between light and shadow, constraining the interplay between light and form. It emphasizes the inherent rigor and precision of the buildings by enhancing their form and thoughtfulness. The abstract beauty of the architecture captured in these photographs aptly illustrates the French poet Baudelaire's line: "'Simplicity' embellishes beauty!" To design a building that connects with the sensuality of life, designers must consider a level far beyond form and construction. Several years after the first edition went out of print, Thinking Architecture (2nd Edition) has been updated with three new essays: "Does Beauty Have a Form?", "The Magic of Reality," and "Light in the Landscape." Thinking Architecture (2nd Edition) has been re-formatted by Hannele Graulund and includes new color photographs of Zumthor's new home and studio in Haldenstein, taken by Laura Padgett himself. In these essays, Peter Zumthor expresses his motivation for designing these buildings: the multifaceted feelings and understandings within ourselves, combined with a powerful and authentic expression and personality. This same sense of tranquility and peace permeates the companion volume to Thinking Architecture (2nd Edition), Atmospheres: The Built Environment.
