Home is Where We Are
Nearing his nineties, Wang Caiwu, a leading overseas Chinese historian, wrote about his "long semi-nomadic life." His life began in colonial Southeast Asia and has endured colonization, war, unrest, and revolution. He spent most of his life migrating across three continents, creating a rich and unique history of wandering amidst the historical flux of the 20th century.Following the first volume, "Where is Home?", the second volume, "Home Is Where the Heart Is," unfolds from the ruins of Wang Caiwu's identity, continuing his exploratory journey through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, London, Cambridge, Canberra, and Hong Kong. Wang Caiwu gradually transitions from a passionate young intellectual elite dedicated to "building a nation and making history" to a university campus in search of greater freedom.
My companion on this journey is co-author Lin Pingting. We'll look back on those years from her perspective: she met the young bearded poet Wang Zengwu at the University of Malaya, married in London, had children there, and moved to five countries and seven cities, searching for a shared identity: "Where we live is our home."
