Shimmer City

The City of Ember is a world built underground. It was once a doomsday shelter for humans, powered by a massive generator that was originally designed to last for two hundred years. However, as time passed, the inhabitants of Ember no longer knew where their ancestors came from, believing the underground was the entire world.
The great generator finally broke down, and the people of Ember realized they faced the danger of losing their light. At the same time, Lina and Doon, who had just turned twelve and lived in Ember, also faced a major turning point in their lives. This was because all students in Ember had to undergo a "Assignment Day" test on their twelfth birthday graduation, where everyone would draw lots to decide what job they would do. Lina prayed that she would draw the job of messenger, but she was assigned to the pipes, the place she least wanted to go.
