In the mid-19th century, the two families migrated from Baghdad to Shanghai, reaping huge profits from the opium trade and becoming billionaire capitalists. They monopolized Shanghai's financial and real estate sectors, transforming the city into a world-class city. At the height of the 20th-century global anti-Semitism, they helped 18,000 Jewish refugees arrive in the city. During the Chinese Civil War, the two families exploited Chiang Kai-shek, only to be stripped of everything by the Communists after the war. They ultimately arrived in Hong Kong and reclaimed their empire.

Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek viewed them as political and economic allies, while Mao Zedong called them "unforgivable capitalists." Shanghai, a lawless city governed by foreign powers, not only offered rapid economic growth but also fostered reform movements and political leaders through its inclusiveness and openness.
