From Baghdad to Shanghai, from Shanghai to Hong Kong...
A period of history covered up by the Chinese Communist Party for decades offers a glimpse into the modern origins of the trilateral struggle between China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jonathan Kaufman delves into this turbulent period, reinterpreting familiar history from a Jewish perspective.
This book is not only an epic chapter about opium smuggling, family feuds, political intrigue, and survival at the bottom of the valley, but also a key work for understanding how China interacts with the world today!
▌Modern Chinese History from a Jewish Perspective Author Kaufman focuses on the family histories of two wealthy Jewish businessmen, the Sassoons and the Kadoories. Together, these two families built the city of Shanghai, which made them billionaires and inspired a whole generation of Chinese businessmen, cultivating successful capitalists and entrepreneurs here and laying the foundation for future prosperity.
In the mid-19th century, the two families migrated from Baghdad to Shanghai, reaping huge profits from the opium trade and becoming billionaire capitalists. They monopolized Shanghai's financial and real estate sectors, transforming the city into a world-class city. At the height of the 20th-century global anti-Semitism, they helped 18,000 Jewish refugees arrive in the city. During the Chinese Civil War, the two families exploited Chiang Kai-shek, only to be stripped of everything by the Communists after the war. They ultimately arrived in Hong Kong and reclaimed their empire.
Sun Yat-sen and Chiang Kai-shek viewed them as political and economic allies, while Mao Zedong called them "unforgivable capitalists." Shanghai, a lawless city governed by foreign powers, not only offered rapid economic growth but also fostered reform movements and political leaders through its inclusiveness and openness. In Shanghai, the Sassoon family provided financial support for Sun Yat-sen's new republican government; in Shanghai, Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling held their wedding reception at the Kadoorie family's hotel; and in Shanghai, Mao Zedong met Chen Duxiu, sowing the seeds of the future Communist revolution.
After the Chinese Civil War, all of the Sassoon and Kadoorie assets in Shanghai collapsed overnight. The Sassoons never returned to Shanghai, while the Kadoories moved to Hong Kong, making it their new home. Just as they had done in Shanghai, they planned the power system and infrastructure that transformed the port into a global financial city. To this day, the Kadoorie family maintains a strong presence in Hong Kong's political and economic power structures.
Shanghai yesterday, China today. Long before Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, Microsoft, and Google grappled with the political pressures of China and the United States, the Sassoons and Kadoories, from offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Mumbai, and London, mastered the global economy and wrestled with the moral and political dilemmas of partnering with China.
The political and economic problems that China faces today are the same problems that shaped the Shanghai Club back then, and they are also the problems that the Sassoon and Kadoorie families face every day.
This book is a history interwoven with fine wine, luxurious mansions, swordplay and shadowy swords, and it is also a genuine Shanghai dream.
