About Book
About Book
This issue of "Single Reading" invites playwright and director Chen Sian to serve as special editor, and for the first time introduces and fully publishes four scripts by contemporary young foreign playwrights: "Luxury, Tranquility" by Swiss playwright Mathieu Berthollet, "The Sewing Group" by British playwright Emma Crowe, "X" by British playwright Alistair McDowell, and "The Chicken Coop" by American playwright Sam Marks.
Since the turn of the century, a new generation of young playwrights, armed with a fresh awareness of the issues at play, have attempted to innovate the structure, language, and characterization of dramatic texts, creating a wave of unique and unconventional plays. Single Reading has selected four of these plays to showcase cutting-edge theatrical practice and to revolutionize our understanding of drama.
These four plays face real life with a critical eye and respond to the dilemmas we all face today: the debate between "death" and "suicide"; the conflict and mutual transformation between the rapidly developing technological life and the basic emotional needs of ordinary people; the desire of mankind to conquer space and the reflection on the destruction of the homeland; the external mental control that is difficult to escape and the internal struggle of the individual in the process of personal growth and gender identity.
This issue of "Single Reading" also includes Fan Xi's photography works focusing on theater, Chen Yikan's review of Tom Stoppard, continuing to write about the charm of drama (theater); Gint's novels, Wu Ang's essays, and Bi Xiao's reviews, continuing this issue's exploration of the common survival crisis of mankind today.
