Alice in Bed

This book is part of "The Complete Works of Susan Sontag," and it is Sontag's only play, a book Sontag described herself as having spent her entire life preparing for. It is a fantasy based on a real person, Alice James – the youngest sister of writer Henry James and psychologist-ethicist William James. In Sontag's play about women, Alice James is also imaginatively conflated with Alice from *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland*. Furthermore, Sontag summons the spirits of two 19th-century American female writers: Emily Dickinson and Margaret Fuller. She also calls upon two representative angry women from the 19th-century stage: Myrtha (from *Giselle*) and Kundry (from Wagner's *Parsifal*), to join a "mad tea party."
