The Empires on Taiwan II: The Historic Memory of "Japanese Colonial Period"

The period of Japanese colonial rule from 1895 to 1945 is commonly referred to in Taiwan as the "Japanese Era." The "Japanese Era" is a method or process of historical memory, not simply a past "historical phase." Historical memories of the Japanese Era exist not only in the construction of high-level intellectual genealogies but also in the everyday activities of ordinary people and various cultural fields.
This three-part book focuses on the post-colonial experience, specifically the reinterpretation of the knowledge and social culture of the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan as it faced shifting political, economic, and social conditions after World War II. The overall scope of discussion encompasses diverse aspects, from academic discourse to the formation of popular discourse, from traditional theatrical genres to popular cultural dissemination, from individual recollections to collective historical memories, and from the construction of laws to the production and management of archives, thus embodying the richness and pervasiveness of historical memory.
