The "Sea of Fertility" tetralogy is the culmination of Yukio Mishima's aesthetic thought. This work is grand in scale, spans a long period of time, and examines fundamental questions of life one by one, making it a panoramic masterpiece. It is also recognized by Japanese critics as the greatest masterpiece of his literary career.
"Runaway Horses" is the second book in the "Sea of Fertility" tetralogy. The novel revolves around the "reincarnation" of the previous volume's protagonist, Kiyohide Matsugae, as Isao Iinuma. The protagonist, Isao, honed his swordsmanship from a young age, achieving a third dan in kendo. As he grew older, he took "The History of the Shinpūren" as his life's ideal, gathered like-minded individuals, and secretly organized the Shōwa Shinpūren, attempting to assassinate financial magnates. After his plot was exposed and he was arrested, he gained sympathy from all walks of society, and was subsequently released with legal and romantic assistance. However, Isao's ambition did not die; he then acted alone, killing the financial magnate Kuranara, fulfilling his lifelong wish, and finally committing seppuku.
