"The Decay of the Angel" is the last installment of the "Sea of Fertility" tetralogy. The story follows the life trajectory of Honda, the character who connects the four books. Nearly eighty years old, Honda discovers three moles on the orphan Toru Yasunaga and concludes that he is the reincarnation of the person he has been searching for, so he adopts Toru Yasunaga; however, Toru Yasunaga subjects Honda to all sorts of abuse. Keiko learns about the reincarnation from Honda and reveals everything to Toru Yasunaga. After reading Kiyokiyo Matsugae's "Dream Diary," left years ago, Toru Yasunaga attempts suicide. He fails, but loses his eyesight. "The Decay of the Angel" is Mishima's final work, written the day before his suicide, a testament to his adoration of the flesh and his exploration of death. At the end of the novel, the scene is desolate, the writing profound, and everything returns to "emptiness."
