About Book
About Book
Men are busy collapsing their houses, women are busy surviving, why does the charming popular culture always "stab" you in the back?
The book version of the feminist podcast followed by thousands of Korean women, Korea's annual non-fiction, is introduced for the first time!
Listen to the powerful sisters blasting the "Ten Sins" of Korean Entertainment!
Find the gender antidote unique to our time.

【Content Introduction】
“We firmly believe that ‘more voices’ is always the path to a whole new world.”
In 2015, the Korean Women's Workers' Union planned and created a feminist podcast, "Donkey Ears of the Bs," and later invited feminist theorist and author Son Hee-jung to host it. This book, "Popular Culture and Gender," compiled the podcast's popular content. Upon its official publication in South Korea, it quickly garnered attention and was named one of the nonfiction works of the year on a book website.
This book, using an "entertainment anatomy" approach, thoroughly dissects the misogynistic underbelly of the spectacle of Korean entertainment, offering a searing medical examination and detoxification guide. Every sentence is a powerful, pink bombshell attacking patriarchal popular culture. It also serves as a cautionary tale of contemporary entertainment culture from a gender perspective, and a call for alternative possibilities: through careful observation and critical reflection on the cultural industry, new perspectives and narratives will emerge.

【Editor's Recommendation】
🤍From variety shows to K-Pop, from Korean dramas to movies, South Korea, as the king of the entertainment industry,
How many cultural wonders has it created for our time, and what kind of "misogyny" logic and patriarchal domestication is implied behind them?
"Korean male entertainment" represented by "Extreme Challenge" and "Where Are We Going, Dad?"
The girl group manufacturing industry represented by "Produce 101"
Then to the Internet "hot memes" and steam game communities,
Whatever you like to watch may have serious problems.
——Yes, regarding "misogyny", you are not "overreacting" as much as you think:
We need to entertain ourselves, but we also need to learn to discern and think clearly;
We need to laugh, but we also need to know why we laugh.
.
🤍Male idols are busy with their reputations collapsing, while female idols are busy with being scolded.
Why does fascinating popular culture always stab you in the back?
A cautionary tale of contemporary entertainment from a gender perspective:
It is not what we hate that destroys us, but what we love.
In the Korean entertainment industry, quarrels happen every day. "Uncles" are being glorified, and girls are being commercialized:
They must be sexy but also pure, they must be successful but not more successful than men;
The only thing they can't do is be themselves——
The "survival mode" where one wrong step can lead to the loss of one's job is not unique to the Korean entertainment industry.
It's time to end! The era where they had to endure it with a smile!
.
🤍Take the knife, Korean girls are here! Senior entertainment reporters × feminist scholars × film critics, and many cultural workers form a sister group;
The podcasts that are enthusiastically followed by Korean women are compiled into a book for the first time. It is the Korean Internet's annual non-fiction work and is launched!
——Sincere, sharp, down-to-earth, exciting bombardment, washing away greasiness!
Every sentence is a pink bomb attacking patriarchal popular culture.
"Men can even make a variety show out of breathing, but women will be scolded for even breathing."
"It seems it's more convenient to pretend to be a man and surf the Internet."
“We reject the patriarchy that makes us wait for a prince.”
…
Using "entertainment anatomy" as a method and using complaints as a weapon,
Analyzing the gender discrimination and double standards rooted in East Asian culture, revealing the real plight of women in areas severely affected by misogyny,
Provide the most incisive cultural physical examination report and detoxification guide.
.
🤍In an era of comprehensive entertainment invasion, how should we ensure the diversity of female images and how can we have diverse interests?
This time let them be our sisters, our mothers, share their wisdom with us, and teach us to hold each other's hands tightly.
Beneath the glamorous facade of the entertainment industry lie working mothers suffering from moral constraints, ordinary women trapped in appearance anxiety and seeking plastic surgery loans, and victims of cyberbullying and digital crime who are hard to guard against...
The real focus of achieving female unity is to discover that "I am not alone" and "our pain and joy are connected to each other", and the real battle is how to learn to abandon all potential prejudices and hold each other's hands.

【Media Recommendation】
I have fought naked on the battlefield of variety shows for 32 years. Now I am old and can no longer fight.
But this book made me understand why that was the only way I could stay on the battlefield all these years.
Although it may sound a bit mean to say this, they said it out loud for me, things that I couldn't say out loud.
— Park Mi-sun, broadcast media personality
.
This book discusses the few similarities between the images of women portrayed in mass media and real women, and how these differences worsen women's lives, as well as the positive impacts they bring. I started reading it with a smile, then anger welled up, and as I continued, tears began to flow.
By analyzing the diverse lives of women through a "visible" approach, the film reveals the process by which female characteristics are transformed into money. In this process, a mechanism of disgust and exploitation of women is ultimately formed.
—Lee Da-hye, Cine21 reporter and writer
.
Under the guidance of expert feminists in various fields, I read on with the intention of challenging the competition.
If my level of awareness of my current situation was 0 when I used to giggle heartlessly while watching TV, then now it is at least level 3.

Recommended for women who drift in the sea called "Netflix" every day.
Let’s chew and feel popular culture together!
Until the stories we miss and want to hear resurface.
