About Book
"The Spirit of Place: Toward a Phenomenology of Architecture" continues to argue that the concept of the work of art is the "concretization" of life situations. Humans fundamentally need to experience their life situations as meaningful, and the purpose of artwork is to "preserve" and convey meaning. In short, the purpose of these early works was to understand architecture from a concrete architectural perspective, and I still believe this purpose is paramount. Much of the confusion today stems from the rambling nature of some people's discussions of architecture. Therefore, I will reflect my architectural convictions: I do not agree that vernacular or monumental architecture is a luxury or something "to move the masses" (as A. Rapoport put it). There are no different "kinds" of architecture; only different situations require different solutions to meet the material and spiritual needs of life.
