On the way

Young student Sal, in pursuit of individual freedom, drives across America with a group of men and women, including Dean (modeled after Cassady) and Marylou. Along the way, they drink excessively, indulge in carnal pleasures, wander, use drugs, and engage in sexual promiscuity. After a long and exhausting period of debauchery, Sal begins to believe in Eastern Zen Buddhism and realizes the meaning of life. The novel's protagonist and his companions hitchhike or drive, crossing the American continent several times, eventually reaching Mexico.
"On the Road" embodies the author's advocated spontaneous writing technique, and widely touches upon American social and cultural customs, all of which bring great difficulty to understanding and translation.
