This book is part of the "Susan Sontag Complete Works" series, and is a winner of the National Book Award and the Jerusalem International Prize for Literature. The novel reinterprets the journey of Polish "stage queen" Helena Modjeska, in the form of a historical biography, as she transforms herself and experiences spiritual revival after moving to America.
At the height of her career, the protagonist, Marina, travels across the ocean with her family and a group of followers, settling in the wild countryside of the American West. She attempts to pursue a new life and find redemption in a Fourierist utopian community. However, this idyllic life is short-lived. To overcome her difficulties, Marina overcomes language barriers and embarks on her highly successful American stage career. The work presents a dazzling historical panorama, vividly depicting the historical environment, events, and social customs of America from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, as well as the clash between the long-standing European civilization represented by Polish idealists and the raw yet vibrant new continent of American civilization. It is an organic fusion of historical detail and modern consciousness.
