About Book
At the end of 2020, Seichodo published "Buddhist Image Tour," a photo collection featuring a new editing style, drawing on Ken Domon's classic work "Ancient Temples Tour" and other collections of ancient temples, focusing on images related to Buddhist statues. This collection, "Ancient Temples of Japan," focuses on architecture beyond Buddhist statues, showcasing 170 images from 25 temples, including their pagodas, gardens, collections, temple complexes, and stone structures and stone Buddhas. Eleven temples are included, along with 40 National Treasures and 17 Important Cultural Properties, including many not normally open to the public.
Following the previous section, "A Pilgrimage of Buddhist Statues," the sacred and sacred Muroji Temple rises from the deep greenery. The columns of Horyuji Temple, the world's oldest wooden structure, boasting over 1,300 years of history, serve as the opening scene. The eaves of the East Pagoda of Yakushiji Temple, preserved in their original state from the early Nara period, the moss garden of Saihoji Temple, which profoundly influenced later gardens, the Sokai Mandala of Toji Temple, considered the oldest surviving polychrome mandala, the niches of Taian, Japan's oldest teahouse, and the mother-of-pearl inlay work adorned with gold leaf inside and out at Konji Hall in Chusonji Temple—these ancient temples, characterized by their simple, solid, orderly, and majestic architecture, not only faithfully convey the enduring legacy of millennia, but also clearly demonstrate the skill, aesthetic taste, and boundless patience of the artisans of the time. Ken Domon, in his masterful composition, captures these elements with a true sense of his own as a photographer.
