Guozhen

Guozhen, a minority settlement on the southwestern border of Hubei Province, was once part of the ancient Ba Kingdom, where shamanic traditions were practiced. By the end of 1950, Guozhen's humiliation had transformed the quaint town from its pristine past. The town's beggars, snake doctors, shamans, barbers, stonemasons, the town chief, intellectuals, a woman living in poverty in the countryside, a former Republican officer who transformed himself into a barber, a gangster with a past in the Pao Brothers society, and a lustful official—all of these individuals, in 1966, were plunged into national tragedy. What would be the fate of Guozhen and all of them?
