书籍简介
How to Break Free from Social Media Platforms Controlled by Tech Giants?
A renowned media critic, through psychological and creative technical analysis and guidance,
Helps you reclaim your internet!
Social media platforms have given rise to various intractable dilemmas, ranging from cloud feudalism, where structural and institutional imbalances are prevalent, to individual-level doomscrolling (mindlessly scrolling like a zombie, no longer aware of what one is doing). In this chaotic state of information overload, we are becoming increasingly narcissistic, more accustomed to openly discussing our inner selves, and more prone to depression. Not only that, but we are also becoming more susceptible to conspiracy theories and fake news, and more easily provoked into arguments. We all recognize this phenomenon, yet we continue to be enslaved by social media platforms, whether willingly or by giving up resistance. This is not due to our lack of self-assertion, but rather because the platforms themselves are Sad by Design (your sadness is designed).
Once, the internet promised a bright future, a path for humanity to pursue equality and liberation. However, in the tide of historical development, it became part of the problem, unable to reverse the destructive power that originated within itself. In today's "stacking of crises," where ecological, economic, and financial crises intertwine and influence each other, the failure of the internet further deepens the intractability of these crises.
Design, or be designed (program or be programmed)!
The author is a well-known European media theorist and the founder of the Institute of Network Cultures. Drawing from his observations in philosophy and media theory, he comprehensively analyzes various potential gaps for change and experiments with various possible alternative platforms. He believes that we must abandon one-size-fits-all solutions and instead seek a diverse range of localized network tools to assist in specific tasks. Any wild imagination is a starting point.
In this book, the author explores the dilemmas of the internet, diagnoses our current stagnant stage, and also inquires about how to "solve the problem" and make platforms less like platforms.
The author believes that social media platforms have superseded the original role of the internet. We must wait for the opportune moment to properly distinguish between the two, in order to repair the broken network and establish "meeting points." The purpose of social media platforms is economic exchange and data extraction, while the purpose of "meeting points" is to create commonality. "Meeting points" can have thousands of interconnected links, yet in the flat and shallow social media platforms, the possibilities are very limited.
In this story, the ultimate solution is not the rise of alternative platforms, but rather the public reclaiming their agency and imagination for the internet. The collective retreat from platforms that ensnare everyone, and instead building autonomous collaboration and creating networks that generate connective momentum. The first step of action begins with a deep understanding of digital decline.
