About Book
About Book
This book discusses common concerns in Hong Kong public discourse: the demise of "One Country, Two Systems" and the rise of authoritarianism or totalitarianism, and then moves on to the most fundamental question: Is Hong Kong entering a new round of major transformation in the sense of Karl Polanyi or a major setback as referred to by authors such as Heinrich Geiselberger?
The author points out that the forces emanating from the political system, the establishment, and capitalists are transforming the cultural life and values of Hong Kong people. Material or narrow economic interests have become the sole goal of life, and people's hearts are changing. At this time, the rise and expansion of various social movements, including those for the conservation of natural ecosystems, living spaces, and historical relics, and the pursuit of equality, justice, democracy, freedom, respect for differences, independence, and human rights, are clear evidence of the human heart resisting the degeneration of the biological level and hoping to return to the human heart from "beastiality."
This book analyzes the shifts in Hong Kong's affective economy and cultural politics over the past two decades. While the focus is on the past two decades, particularly the period surrounding the Umbrella Incident, exploring the two opposing meanings of "the people's hearts remain" requires situating them within a longer historical context.
