About Book

The Joy Luck Club

Amy Tan's *The Joy Luck Club* is her debut novel and an autobiographical work, drawing on the experiences of her mother and grandmother. "The Joy Luck Club" refers to a weekly gathering of four close friends. Four Chinese women, from different corners of China, each with their own difficult destinies, made their way to America, put down roots, and raised families. On one hand, they struggled to adapt to life in a foreign land, grappling with and worrying about how to manage their relationships with their daughters. On the other hand, they remained inextricably linked to their homeland. Their childhood experiences varied, and in their youth, they endured displacement caused by war, facing various deliberate or accidental cruelties of fate. Ultimately, while filled with maternal love, they inevitably faced all kinds of misunderstandings when dealing with a new generation whose upbringing and way of thinking were vastly different from their own.
The protagonist, Jing-mei Woo, initially had deep misunderstandings with her mother. When she returned to China in place of her deceased mother to visit her two older sisters, who had been separated during the war, she deeply felt the hardships of the previous generation and the indissoluble family ties.
