The Secret of Comedy

"Dan Du" debuts "Dan Du PLUS: The Secrets of Comedy: Starting with Stand-Up Comedy." Specially edited by Jia Xingjia and Dong Dongqiang, the book features a group of China's earliest stand-up comedians, including Li Dan, Cheng Lu, Wang Jianguo, Pang Bo, Hu Lan, and Zhou Qimo, for in-depth discussions. They reflect on their journeys and growth over the past decade, share memorable performance experiences, creative insights, and work habits, and exchange observations and insights on the current state of the industry. While a stand-up comedian's only criterion is to be funny, this book isn't. Jia Qiang earnestly questions them about the "whys" of stand-up comedy, attempting to understand the still-murky world of stand-up comedy. He also witnesses comedians striving to be as authentic in their daily lives as they are on stage, restraining themselves with authenticity. This may also explain why we appreciate and trust stand-up comedy today: right now, we need authenticity and, even more importantly, laughter.
This is the first attempt in China to explore the relationship between "talk show" and "comedy" from multiple dimensions such as artistic creation, industry development, popular culture, and social changes with the size and depth of a book. We hope that it is just the beginning.
