Chinatowns around the World: Gilded Ghetto, Ethnopolis, and Cultural Diaspora

The phenomenon of "Chinatown" is of great interest to both the public and scholars. In films and popular novels, Chinatown is often portrayed as a mysterious, exotic, oriental neighborhood. Its image is complex and ever-changing, at times a gang-ridden slum, at others a model community for elite Chinese, and at others a tourist destination offering a taste of Chinese cuisine and culture.
In "Chinatown," scholars draw on extensive empirical evidence to delve into the structure and nature of Chinatowns, examining the historical shifts in the functions and nature of Chinatowns around the world. In particular, they examine the role played by local societies in shaping these cities. In recent years, with the rise of China's economy and the increasing transnational mobility of people, the interaction between Chinatowns and local societies has also undergone significant changes.
