About Book

Sketching the changing landscape of Taiwanese research, two scholars, Masatake Wakabayashi and Mi-cha Wu, have a dialogue after 30 years.
Open a window for Taiwan research to look to the past and into the future.

In the book "Dialogues on Taiwan," published by the "Independence Evening News Publishing Department" in 1989, two young scholars, Wu Mi-cha and Wakabayashi Masatake, discussed their travels in China from personal and academic, generational and temporal perspectives, their observations on topics such as Taiwanese identity and the beginnings and development of Taiwanese history research, leaving an important record of the gradually flourishing Taiwanese society and Taiwanese studies in the 1980s.

Thirty years later, Wakabayashi Masashi and Wu Mi-cha have become foremost scholars in this research field. In this conversation, they not only reviewed the development of Taiwan studies over the past 30 years, but also discussed their research experiences and prospects regarding Taiwan studies in the Japanese academic community and research exchanges between Taiwan and Japan.

Features of this book
◎ This collection includes the conversation from the long-out-of-print 1989 edition of "Taiwan Dialogue" published by the Cultural Publishing Department of the Independence Evening News. It records the two scholars' discussions and expectations about Japanese and Chinese research on Taiwan history thirty years ago, as well as their observations on Chinese society in the early days of reform and opening up.

◎ In addition to continuing the concerns of the old version, the new version of the conversation also continues the development of Taiwanese historical materials and the exploration of historical interpretations. It also mentions the institutionalization of Taiwan studies in contemporary Japan and the development and changes of Taiwan studies over the years.

◎ In addition to their personal research experiences, the two scholars also discussed their exchange experiences from the 1990s to 2004, how they cultivated young Taiwanese history research talents, and invited five researchers who had participated in the exchange to review this process.
