About Book
About Book
After martial law was lifted, people gradually learned about the long-unspoken February 28 Incident and the White Terror that followed Taiwan's liberation. However, the April 6th Student Movement of 1949, sandwiched between these two events, remains largely unknown. To faithfully recreate the youthful anthem of those days, Lan Bozhou wrote the novel "Taipei Lovers."
Lan Bozhou scoured historical records, newspapers, and magazines, diligently searching for witnesses who personally experienced that turbulent anti-civil war movement and who were scattered after the chaotic reorganization. He listened to their oral histories recounting the events of the past, hoping to fill in the gaps in historical facts. This painstaking and arduous work has now faded with age, making it difficult to complete.
This book further chronicles the student movement in Taiwan from 1945 to 1949, from its prelude during the Japanese colonial period to the Taiwan Student Union in the early years of the Restoration; from the anti-American student movement on the eve of the February 28 Incident to the struggles and sacrifices during the February 28 Incident; from the student movement at the Normal University after the February 28 Incident to the student movement at National Taiwan University, exemplified by the Mailangge Choir; from the peak of the student movement in March 1949 to the April 6th Incident, which suppressed the movement. This book, chronologically presenting testimonies from all sides, fully unearths the truth about this previously buried period of the student movement. This demonstrates the value of this book.
Our youth, like a raging fire, burns bright red in the fields of battle. Our youth, like a seagull, leaps bravely under the stormy sky. The fields are covered with thorns, let us burn brighter. The sky is filled with darkness, let us leap more bravely. We will burn a path through the thorns. We will rush towards the dawn in the darkness. — "Youth Battle Song"
