The Rebel

《The Rebel》is one of the masterpieces by Albert Camus, the French literary giant of absurd existential philosophy. In this extensively referenced essay, Camus, with an honest and upright attitude, re-examines the spirit of rebellion that has shone throughout human history: from a historical perspective, the French Revolution and the Russian Revolution; from a philosophical perspective, figures like Marquis de Sade, Saint-Just, Nietzsche, and Marx; and from ideological movements, ranging from nihilism to surrealism, from anarchism to liberalism. Camus, in his novels, plays, essays, and treatises, profoundly reveals humanity's solitude in an alien world, the growing alienation of individuals from themselves, and the inevitability of sin and death. However, while revealing the absurdity of the world, he does not fall into despair or dejection. He advocates for rising in rebellion amidst the absurd, for upholding truth and justice in despair. He points out a path of free humanism to the world that lies outside of Christianity and Marxism. His courage to face a bleak life, and his indomitable spirit of "knowing something is impossible but still striving for it," made him, after World War II, not only in France but also in Europe, and ultimately across the globe, a spokesperson for his generation and a spiritual mentor for the next.
