书籍简介

Today, there are three criteria for evaluating those "patriots": First, whether they "chose the wrong side" in international politics; second, whether they gained benefits in "sovereignty" (note: not human rights) for their own country and people, such as increased territory or the autonomy of their own rulers in governing; and third, whether they were harmful or beneficial to human rights, humanity, and human dignity. In the aforementioned Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Finland, the weight of these three criteria seems to increase in order: choosing the wrong side is a sin, but if it was for the "national interest" of one's own country and people, it seems excusable. However, if serious crimes against humanity, humaneness, and human rights were committed, then even if the initial intention was so-called "patriotism," and even if it did indeed increase "national interest," such a person should still be condemned. Today's Eastern European evaluation of these figures is basically based on these three criteria, and the most important of these is the third criterion, namely, the standard of humanity, human rights, and human dignity. Patriots who chose the wrong side can be forgiven, but "patriots" who committed crimes against humanity are unforgivable.
