Here, Kafka experimented with and forged his own writing style. These include extensive excerpts on creative motivations, reading notes, literary observations, and reflections, some of which have even become complete short stories. They also record dreams, complex emotions concerning personal emotions and family life, and snapshots of the city, work, social, and cultural environment in which he lived. Beyond the torment of literary devotion lies a desire for a vibrant life. These diaries reveal his multiple personas as a son, brother, friend, lover, employee, cultural participant, and café-goer, revealing aspects of Kafka's character that are often overlooked.
This book contains Kafka's diaries from 1910 to 1923, as well as notes from several travels. Edited and revised by Brod, Kafka's literary executor, it also includes sketches from the original manuscripts. The gaps between life and dreams constantly appear between the pages, leading readers into Kafka's labyrinthine inner world.
During the compilation process, Brod abbreviated some names to protect the privacy of the individuals involved. This edition has restored some key names through annotations. Furthermore, annotations have been added to address relevant place names and historical context, as well as key events in Kafka's life. Kafka's diaries were originally written in twelve large quarto notebooks. Although dated, they contain numerous interruptions, repetitions, and disorganized sequences. Brod's edition arranges the diaries in chronological order for easier reading. This edition includes annotations where Brod clearly altered the order, providing a glimpse into the original text.
