Caligula

In his novels, plays, essays, and treatises, Camus profoundly reveals human loneliness in an alien world, the increasing alienation between individuals and themselves, and the inevitability of sin and death. However, while exposing the absurdity of the world, he does not despair or become despondent. He advocates for resistance in the face of absurdity and perseverance for truth and justice amidst despair, pointing out a path of free humanism for the world beyond Christianity and Marxism. His courage in confronting a bleak life and his dauntless spirit of "knowing it's impossible yet doing it anyway" made him a spokesperson for his generation and a spiritual mentor for the next, not only in France but also across Europe and ultimately worldwide after World War II.
