About Book

This is a picture book that introduces financial concepts to children by exploring their views on money. Grandpa Hedgehog found a gold coin on a forest path. Being old and finding it hard to gather food for winter, he thought about using the coin to buy some provisions. However, he couldn't find a store. Instead, he received help from various animals on his journey – the little squirrel gave him dried bamboo shoots, the crow made him new shoes, the spider wove him socks, and baby bear brought him a jar of honey. In the end, with dried bamboo shoots, new shoes, warm socks, and honey, Grandpa Hedgehog decided to put the gold coin back where he found it, leaving it for someone who truly needed it.
Just by looking at the pictures, you might think this is a "clichéd" story about returning lost money, but reading the text alongside the illustrations, you'll understand why this story has been popular in Russia for over half a century. It teaches children how to view money correctly and reminds them of the meaning of people supporting each other in life.
