About Book

The Verdict

This book is one of the six volumes in the "Designer Collaborative Series: K Classics." "The Judgment" (Das Urteil) is a novella Kafka wrote in one night, from the evening of September 22nd to the early morning of September 23rd, 1912. It is considered an early representative work showcasing Kafka's developing writing style, depicting a judgment between father and son that can plunge one into an abyss.
This book also includes "The Stoker (A Fragment)" (Der Heizer: Ein Fragment), which is the first chapter of Kafka's unfinished novel "The Missing Person" (later renamed "America"). It was written in early 1912 and published the following year by Kurt Wolff Verlag in Germany. The novella tells the story of 16-year-old Karl traveling alone to America and advocating for the unfair treatment of the stoker on the ship.
Editor's Recommendation:
★The "K Classics" series covers all of Kafka's novellas and short stories published during his lifetime. It also includes 6 posthumously unpublished works, Kafka's will, and a chronology of Kafka's life.
★8 works are exclusive to the Tong Yali translation, with 3 of these short, posthumous works appearing for the first time in simplified Chinese.
★Peter Mendelsund, one of the world's top book cover designers, created the cover design, crafting "works of art within books." His designs are described by The Wall Street Journal as "among the most recognizable and iconic designs in contemporary fiction cover art." "K Classics" breaks away from the traditionally heavy and plain Kafka books, presenting a thoroughly avant-garde feel; abstract graphics and bright colors breathe new life into Kafka's works.
★Directly translated from German by a single translator. Compared to the common compiled anthologies on the market, the "K Classics" series has a more consistent linguistic style; translated directly from German, it more purely restores the essence of Kafka's works.
