Regarding the Pain of Others

Susan Sontag, along with Simone de Beauvoir and Hannah Arendt, is considered one of the most important contemporary female intellectuals in the West. She is a renowned American "New Intellectual," hailed as "the conscience of the American public" and "the foremost critic on both sides of the Atlantic." She won the National Book Award in 2000, the Jerusalem International Prize for Literature in 2001, and the Prince of Asturias Prize in Spain and the German Book Trade Peace Prize, Germany's largest book prize, in 2003.
"The Complete Works of Susan Sontag" is a compilation of her entire body of work, divided into two sections: "Essays" and "Literature" (including two volumes of "Diaries" edited by her son, David Reeve). Comprising 16 volumes, it contains over 2.8 million words. This is the largest collection of works by a leading contemporary Western thinker, critic, and writer ever published in the Chinese-speaking world, and boasts exclusive copyright. It holds significant milestone significance in contemporary Chinese thought, academia, criticism, literature, culture, and publishing. "On the Pain of Others," Susan Sontag's follow-up to "On Photography," was also her final work before her death. The book focuses on war photography, exploring the relationship between human suffering and the viewer. While these horrific images can evoke compassion, the sense of powerlessness inherent in human life renders these pervasive and incongruous images seem unnecessary and absurd. If we believe the content of images without thinking, our moral judgment will only become weaker and weaker. Sontag writes about images in pure text, providing viewers with space for reflection and to face "the suffering of others."
