About Book
About Book
Xixi's autobiographical novel, about migration and growth, some memories
Xixi:
"My generation has truly been driven since childhood, following our parents on the move for various reasons. We grew up slowly and painstakingly amidst this migration. As soon as we settled down a bit, we noticed that many of our friends had embarked on another, perhaps even more distant, migration."
In 1981, Xixi began serializing her autobiographical novel "Migratory Birds" in Hong Kong's "Express", and concluded it more than a year later, in 1982, with a total of 300,000 words. Later, the first volume of "Migratory Birds" was published as 180,000 words, starting with the protagonist "Sister Susu's" self-narration. The first edition was published in 1991.
26 years later, in 2018, the second edition of "Migratory Birds" was reprinted, and its sister volume "Weaving the Nest" was written and published.
Migratory Birds is Xixi's longest novel to date. Using an autobiographical, nostalgic tone, it tells the story of a young woman who migrates from Shanghai to Hong Kong during the Anti-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War, and her growth over time. The story touches upon the historical emotions of generations beyond her own, and the plain, effortless language is particularly striking.
