Yu Ying-shih's Memoirs

From the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War in 1937 to the present day, China has experienced the most turbulent period in modern history. I deeply feel that how I capture the profound changes of this unique historical period in my interviews is far more significant than simply tracing the development of my own life. Memoirs inevitably vary depending on individual circumstances. Having spent my life in research and teaching, my recollections can only roam within the realms of scholarship, thought, and culture. Needless to say, the changes I have experienced have also been shaped by this particular sphere. I hope my recollections can contribute to a deeper understanding of this period of historical change. I also believe that other scholars of my generation will undoubtedly leave their memories in different ways. The more recollections like this, the better, as they can cross-check similarities and contrast differences. Another motivation for publishing this "Memoir" is to inspire others to reminisce about the past. If I may be allowed one more extravagant hope, I would say that the personal learning and thinking journey I recount in my "Memoirs," regardless of its gains and losses, may serve as a reference for a new generation of students. —Yu Ying-shih The long-awaited masterpiece "Yu Ying-shih Memoirs," a global leader in Chinese studies, has finally been published.
