This book contains 18 pieces, all published between March 1947 and August 1948, demonstrating Dazai's immense creative energy in the last two years of his life.
This includes masterpieces such as Dazai Osamu's representative works "The Setting Sun," "No Longer Human," and his posthumous work "Goodbye."
These works either focus on family relationships such as those between spouses and parents and children, or depict women who appear vulgar but have pure hearts, or offer scathing satire of the hypocrisy of literati such as writers and editors, as well as the bureaucratic class. Some gaze at the shattered or even insane souls of the postwar era, some lament the inability to refuse people, and some speak for the weak whose lives are tragic due to recklessness and weakness. Grand narratives are rare in these works, but they all reflect Dazai's perspective of viewing the weak as equals, allowing them to feel a sense of "companionship" amidst their loneliness and confusion.
