May 4, 2019, marks the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement. But what was May Fourth? Why compile a book to discuss it, reviewing it and its impact from various perspectives?
Return to the scene of the May Fourth Movement and leisurely observe its legend. May Fourth remains unfinished; its successes and failures still sting those of us who live in numbness, resignation, insecurity, and a loss of ideals. May Fourth remains unfinished, for it is not history of the past, but of the future.
"May Fourth @ 100: Culture, Thought, History" invites 51 scholars from diverse fields to express their views, rather than merely reopening the problematic and polemical nature of the May Fourth Movement. This book aims to review the May Fourth Movement through its cultural, literary, and intellectual histories. These three interlinked perspectives form the foundation of the May Fourth narrative and imagination, inspiring various social practices and even revolutions. Its cacophony of voices deliberately echoes the spirit of the May Fourth Movement: freedom of expression and individual expression. Reflecting on the turbulent past century in China and the Chinese-speaking world, we witness both the best and the worst of possibilities.
Looking back at the May Fourth Movement, we understand that our current position is not necessarily different from that of the May Fourth Movement: outcry and hesitation, passion and disillusionment, the myth of the May Fourth Movement or whether we think of it or not, are all intertwined, leading to the next round of thinking and action.
