"Big Breasts and Wide Hips" is the representative novel by 2012 Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan, written in 1995. With its rich imagination, powerful historical critique, and profound compassion and redemption, this epic work has been hailed as the "Bible of Northeast Gaomi Township." It was awarded the inaugural "Da Jia Red River Literature Prize" and hailed by the Nobel Prize Committee as "Mo Yan's most outstanding novel."
This book recounts the turbulent course of modern China over a century through the rise and fall of a family in Northeast Gaomi Township. The mother, a folk goddess burdened with suffering, endures a tumultuous fate. Her numerous children, forming a sprawling family, are inextricably linked to various social forces, civic organizations, and the power discourse of the mad era, drawing her irresistibly into the political arena. The struggles and clashes between these forces unfold within the family, leaving the mother to endure and manage suffering alone: banditry, war, displacement, the death of loved ones, and the anxiety and worry for her crippled only son. Her act of stealing food from the mill during the mad era, even more deeply, reveals a deep affection, like a bird spitting out its food. This magnificent work, spanning over 500,000 words and gestating over a decade, was completed in less than three months.
"In the early spring of 1995, in a small room in my hometown, as I wrote on a sheet of manuscript paper, 'This book is dedicated to the spirit of my mother in heaven,' my eyes were already filled with tears... I thought to myself, this book is dedicated not only to my mother, but to all mothers in the world." —Mo Yan
