△Introduction△
Warfare is fought within a specific geographical environment, and its outcome is largely influenced by the terrain. In large-scale wars, one or more regions, due to their strategic location, become hotspots of contention between the warring parties. Their gains and losses often have a decisive impact on the outcome of the war. In military geography, such strategic locations are known as "pivot areas."
Spanning the Three Dynasties and continuing through the Southern Song, this book meticulously explores key strategic locations such as Gan and Guan during the Three Dynasties; Xingyang and Aocang during the Qin and Han dynasties; Hefei, Ruxu, and Hanzhong during the Three Kingdoms period; the three cities of Heyang from the Northern Dynasties to the mid-Tang Dynasty; and Xiangyang in the late Southern Song Dynasty. From these perspectives, it offers a comprehensive and systematic study of war strategies, deployments, and routes. With the insight of a historical geographer, the author discusses the successes and failures of military commanders throughout history, exploring the underlying causes of victory and defeat in battle. Furthermore, the book explores the distribution and evolution of key strategic locations, examining the shifts of strategically important locations throughout history, using the trajectory of Chinese history as a central thread, and analyzing the social context and underlying causes.
This revised edition, after necessary revisions to existing content, adds two new chapters: "The Internal Defense Strategy of 'Using Guanzhong to Control Shandong' during the Qin and Western Han Dynasties" and "Jinyang and the East-West Warfare in the Late Northern Dynasties." We have also increased the number of maps to 73 for the convenience of readers.
