About Book

The Book of Songs is a collection of Chinese poetry, comprising 305 poems composed over 500 years, from the early Western Zhou Dynasty to the mid-Spring and Autumn Period. During the pre-Qin era, it was called "Shi" (Songs), or sometimes "Shi San Bai" (Three Hundred Songs) or "San Bai Pian" (Three Hundred Pieces) to denote its approximate number of poems. It was not until the Han Dynasty, when it was honored as a Confucian classic, that it became known as "Shi Jing" (The Book of Songs), a name that has been used ever since. The Book of Songs was compiled around the Spring and Autumn Period, and in the Han Dynasty, there were four schools that taught it: Qi, Lu, Han, and Mao. After the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Qi, Lu, and Han schools gradually disappeared, with only the "Han Shi Wai Zhuan" (Han's Annotation to the Book of Songs) remaining. The Mao School became prominent after the Eastern Han Dynasty and has been passed down to the present day.
