Abnormal people

By tracing the course of history, Foucault identified three categories of abnormal people in Western society: the deformed, a phenomenon dating back to ancient Rome; those in need of reform in the 17th and 18th centuries; and the masturbating child in the late 18th century. By the 19th century, these three categories had been collectively constructed as "abnormal," becoming a danger to society and the subject of knowledge and power in law, education, medicine, and psychiatry.
Foucault shows us how normalizing power emerges, how it is formed, and how it is installed. It never relies on just one institution, but is established in various ways and in different institutions, ultimately extending its dominance in Western society.
