About Book
Shanghai, a city of spectacle. More and more places are becoming tourist destinations, and new locations and activities are constantly being discovered; yet, forgotten is the increasingly cramped world of everyday life, and the silent ruins. In the past thirty years, nearly half of Shanghai's urban space has been transformed. Taking 2021 as a time slice, there are approximately 1,000 ruins within Shanghai's Outer Ring Road, including industrial wasteland, abandoned gardens, and old neighborhoods. Decay and rebirth are the inevitable cycles of life. However, a city's attitude towards ruins reflects its attitude towards the accumulated value of time. Within urban ruins, wanderers, lost and adventurous, enter a forgotten time and space; and if creators fail to bend down and approach spatial design with a simple heart, they will become complicit in the spectacle. In a world where all meanings have vanished into thin air, there is always a group of people, including the flâneurs of Paris in the late 19th century, the Situationists of the 1960s, the street observers of Tokyo in the 1980s, and the members of the "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall" group on Douban today, who linger in the city, searching for a "different continent."
