👁️🗨️ India's Nicholas's Ten Years of Exile: The Pinnacle of Asian Literature and Conscience in the 20th Century
👁️🗨️ The second part of the "Buru Island Quartet" by Indonesian national treasure writer Pramudiya
👁️🗨️ “The story of how a new kind of human was born on Earth”
-
"Sons of All Nations" is the second part of the "Blue Island Quartet", and the story continues from "The World".
Aunt Ventosoro's daughter, Annaliese, was taken to the Netherlands, and her son, Robert, suffered a sudden tragedy in the United States, leaving her struggling to navigate the devastating situation. Meanwhile, Mink befriended landless Javanese peasants like Trunodonso, gaining a deeper understanding of the realities of life at the bottom of society. Later, he met Xu Asi, a revolutionary from the late Qing Dynasty, which triggered a shift in his inner life.
The Buru Island Quartet, set primarily during the nascent stage of Indonesia's national awakening, features a large cast of characters and a grand structure. The characters grapple with their own destinies while also confronting the ideological and cultural clashes of the colonial era.
Author Pramudiya was imprisoned for fifteen years in the Buru Island detention camp, also known as "Innikag," for the September 30th Incident. During this time, he completed his world-renowned "Buru Island Quartet"—"The World," "Sons of Nations," "Footprints," and "The Glass House." The Buru Island Quartet focuses on the Indonesian national awakening from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, brilliantly depicting this historical journey through vivid artistic imagery and a dramatic storyline.

📣 Expert Comments
If one asks what the basic plot of "The World" and "Son of All Nations" is, especially "Son of All Nations," the answer is: the birth of a new personality. The reader will find this point extremely true: the new historical figure does not begin with consciousness, but with existence; not with thought, but with life.

The Buru Island Quartet is Pramudya's attempt to answer the question, "What is Indonesia?" ... Identity is paramount in this work, with people and humanity becoming paramount above all else.
—Eka Guniawan (Indonesian writer)

A novel that inspires the rediscovery of erased literature and history, a novel that forces us to continually question the existence of "world literature" and its established order.

With this novel, Pramudya ended the stagnant situation in the Indonesian literary world. It will enter the ranks of world literature and will be no less impressive than those masterpieces that won the Nobel Prize.
—Balakit (Indonesian critic)
