Everything Is an Emergency: An OCD Story in Words & Pictures

- Editor's Recommendation -
✧A book about heartbreak ✧A book about healing ✧A book about understanding ✧A book about creation ✧Recommended by the New York Times Book Review's "Editor's Choice" column ✧
Is the door locked? Are your hands washed? Are the cups neatly arranged? What? A kiss? A darkly funny true story about obsessive-compulsive disorder, told by a New Yorker cartoonist.
★Before obsessive-compulsive disorder completely destroys us, try to understand it, find ways to cope with it, and get life back on track.
The world is filled with children, puppies, trash, and dripping air conditioners. Opportunities for social interactions to go awry abound. A mouse scurries from one pile of trash to another right under my feet. Somewhere, my friend is mad at me. I may have left the oven on and unlocked the door. … These thoughts come and go, but they never become a tangle.”
- Introduction -
Cartoonist Jason Adam Katzenstein has suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) since childhood. It's a mental illness that compels him to perform compulsive behaviors to avoid non-existent dangers. He simply wanted to live a normal life, but his overactive, anxious mind plagued him. Everyday things, like shaking hands or sharing a drink, would snowball into absolute disasters. He struggled to hide these embarrassing symptoms, from checking and rewashing to overthinking. But as his life progressed, his OCD only worsened. At a low point in his life, he finally sought help from a therapist and worked to learn to live with the disorder. In this graphic novel, the New Yorker cartoonist shares his candid and funny story of his struggle with OCD: how OCD can ruin a life, but if we try to understand it and find ways to cope with it, we can put our lives back on track.
- Media Recommendation -
A guide into the world of dysfunctional psychology, this book is an unmissable educational opportunity for anyone unfamiliar with the physical and mental toll of severe OCD. Even those who don't suffer from the disorder can take solace in Katzenstein's insight: find those few moments when you feel good, and savor them.
—The New York Times Book Review
This book completely saved me. It's a brilliant, honest, and necessary book that reveals the complexity of the human brain while showing how creativity and friendship can be our anchors. It's a must-read for anyone who's ever wondered if they see the world differently than others.
—Ada Limón, author of Bright Dead Things "This is a book that delves into the depths of difficult situations: from Munch-esque horror to the rocky end of the road to the funniest group therapy scene I've ever seen. Even if you don't have OCD, you'll enjoy this book. Like me, you too can find your own takeaways from these darkly funny true stories."
—Amy Blum, author of "White House" This book healed my heart after it broke it!
