About Book

Imagination of the ゼロ era

Fandom? Narcissism? Giant babies? Skits? Fake history? Conspiracy? King of Understanding?
The mood of the times, where everyone is against everyone, is intolerant of each other and has long been predicted by this book.
Shocking Mindfuck——Golden sentences (outrageous remarks?) frequently appear, poking at every refugee of the times who can't lie down——————————
【Content Introduction】
In the late 1990s, Japan saw a widespread loss of confidence in social self-realization, leading to the emergence of a "shut-in/psychological" imagination driven by a quest for self-recognition. Neon Genesis Evangelion was its most successful and iconic work. After the turn of the millennium, this imagination gradually shifted to a "decisionist/survivalist" model, where people were forced to choose core values in the absence of a foundation, and then compete and fight against each other based on these core values.
Uno Tsunehiro, one of Japan's most active young critics, begins his exploration of popular culture, using classic films, anime, and manga from the 2000s, such as "Death Note," "Battle Royale," and "Hidden Gems," to explore the profound shifts in Japanese society and culture from the late 1990s to the first decade of the 21st century, focusing on the evolution of imagination and subcultures during this period. Uno points out that while some works recognize the limitations of "decisionism," a new path of imagination is needed to transcend it.

【Editor's Recommendation】
⭐ A classic debut! The representative work of Uno Tsunehiro, the 2D Brahman and the Japanese otaku "King of Talk". Who is Uno Tsunehiro?
Editor-in-chief of Japan's highly popular cultural review magazine "PLANETS",
With a sharp writing style, thousands of fans, and the understanding of otakus, he is an absolute "winner in life"——
It became an instant hit, peaked at its debut, and has been a bestseller for over ten years.
Uno Tsuyoshi's masterpiece, the classic of Japanese subculture criticism, "Imagination of the 00s", has finally been officially introduced.
"Survivalism" and "decisionism" have long been concepts that critics talk about with great relish.
Battle royale-style survival scenes are played out repeatedly in the increasingly fierce identity politics struggle.
The mood of the times, where everyone is against everyone, is intolerant of each other and has long been predicted by this book.
"Everyone thinks they are the victim, a marginalized culture, and therefore legitimate."
.
⭐ Impact Mindfuck——Golden sentences frequently appear, poking at every era where refugees cannot lie down. The revolution of second-time travel "Men don't play" is in full swing.
The vulnerable second dimension resentment is transformed into the "God Rabbit Duality".
History studies are very popular on Zhihu/Bilibili, and the "pseudo-history" conspiracy theory is all the rage on the Internet.
On the Internet, which is like a garbage dump: as long as you take a stand without hesitation,
Everyone can efficiently get cheap pleasure by cursing with decisiveness.
“Once you come into contact with others, once you want to achieve something,
Misunderstandings are inevitable, hurting others and yourself at the same time."
"Only read the information you want to read, only believe the ideology you want to believe, and only love the characters you want to love.
Only those who share these things will connect with each other, forming an island universe of separate and coexisting people.
“In order to prove the temporary truth of the plastic foam Shiva, we need to launch a mobilization game against other small narratives.”
The tide of the times crushed me mercilessly.
All we can do is embrace the "daily" and "nearby",
Warm up together around the campfire.
“Everyday life itself is a confrontation with death; it is a kind of story.”
.
⭐ Popular works from the 00s are gathered here. Are the secrets of childhood classics so profound?
Can Shinji Ikari's "autism" stop Light Yagami's "decision"?
Why is the chaotic Ikebukuro West Exit Park so appealing?
Where exactly is the melancholy youth of Haruhi Suzumiya located?
Why do the protagonists of girls' comics always remain young and trapped in theme parks?
How does Shuji Kiritani create another possibility for "Battle Royale" through the rewritten ending?

Neon Genesis Evangelion, Death Note, Battle Royale
"Horse Transformation", "Fullmetal Alchemist", "Honey and Clover"
Ayumi Hamasaki, Kankuro Miyato, Kinoko Nao, Rumiko Takahashi, Eiji Otsuka...
A childhood classic takes an unimaginable path:
Defamiliarize familiar stories and map out the workings of the desire device.
Exploring the unconscious structure and symbolic order in Japanese aesthetic myths.

【Expert Recommendation】
"Mobilization Game/Battle Royale" is not only the "imagination of the 2000s" but also the "new reality of the 2020s." Uno Tsunehiro attempts to respond to this universalized new reality of neoliberal society through the concept of "in-between communities." Reading this book not only allows me to explore the past of Japanese subculture but also allows me to imagine the future of Chinese society.

While "Imagination of the 2000s" acknowledges the end of grand narratives, in contrast to Hiroki Azuma's analysis of otaku and databases, Tsunehiro Uno highlights the "2000s imagination" as a survivalist, decisive imagination. This is a battle royale imagination, where survival is impossible without fighting. Numerous confrontations have forced the 2000s onto a path of decisiveness. In this book, Uno uses a wealth of anime and games to illustrate the impossible dilemma between decisiveness and otaku that the 2000s found themselves in. To escape this dilemma, a new fantasy of community is needed.

Is radical philosophical criticism often just fashionable empty talk, or even nonsense? Professor Uno's book is undoubtedly a powerful rebuttal. If you're still struggling to understand how to integrate seemingly profound philosophical speculation with the vividness and concreteness of daily life, this book offers a model and a blueprint. Every subheading throughout the book is so captivating and thought-provoking, constantly reminding and warning us that, no matter the era, it is necessary and possible to persist in original and independent thinking.

The first question readers might have when faced with this book is, why read "The Imagination of the '00s" in the '20s? The answer is simple: we haven't yet moved on from the problematics of the '00s... Whether it's the popularity of the game "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," the sweeping television series "Squidward Tennis," or the resurgence of the "Hunger Games" film series, all demonstrate that the "battle royale" discussed by Uno is not only timeless, but has even become a global issue with the global triumph of neoliberalism. It's no exaggeration to say that we're still living in the imagination of the '00s.
