The book's narrative begins with the "Great Flowing River" beyond the Great Wall and ends at "Yakouhai" in Hengchun, at the southern tip of Taiwan...
The Great Flowing River,
Located in Northeast China, it is one of China's seven major rivers, known as the "Mother River" to the people of Liaoning.
Its southern boundary is the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea, its southwest borders the inland rivers of Inner Mongolia and the Haihe River Basin of Hebei, and its north connects with the Songhua River Basin.
This river was called Julu River in ancient times, is now called Liaohe River, and was called Great Flowing River (Juliu River) in the Qing Dynasty.
The "Battle of the Great Flowing River," which influenced China's destiny, took place in the fourteenth year of the Republic of China, and the local simple people still used the name "Great Flowing River" from the Qing Dynasty.
The author Qi Bangyuan's father, Qi Shiying—a passionate young man who studied in Germany in the early years of the Republic of China, a reformer in Northeast China before the September 18th Incident,
Regretted throughout his life the battle of the Great Flowing River where success almost came but failed.
The impassable Great Flowing River was like the harsh reality, diplomacy and reformist ideas were frozen there, and from then on began the modern suffering of Northeast China, which eventually spread throughout the whole of China.
The author's life is a microcosm of the turbulent 20th century.
This book took four years of painstaking effort to complete.
With profound insight, deep affection, and eloquent prose, the author recounts a grand story spanning a century and crossing both sides of the strait.
Dedicated to—all who have sacrificed for their country.
