The Story: From Eyesore to Art

On March 17, we received a familiar notice from the city: a violation for graffiti on our storefront gate. For the second time, we are facing a potential penalty of $1,000 per day if the gate isn't cleared within 30 days.

Right: Our current gate after being tagged. The residuals from previous graffiti are still visible.

Last time, it took multiple nights and a dedicated team of friends to scrub the metal, yet the faded outlines of the past remain. We believe that simply washing away the unwanted isn't enough. It is tedious, temporary, and—frankly—meaningless.

Last time, it took us and a group of friends several nights of continuous work to scrub the paint off the metal gate, but the faint traces of the past are still visible. We firmly believe that merely washing away unwanted graffiti is not enough. This process is not only cumbersome and temporary, but frankly—meaningless.

We want to be proactive. We want to create. Instead of just cleaning, we are choosing to elevate our street by installing a professional mural. We want to transform a target for vandalism into a canvas for beauty that reflects our community’s spirit.

We want to be proactive, we want to create. Instead of passively cleaning, we choose to enhance the vibrancy of our street by painting a professional mural. We hope to transform this original target for vandalism into a beautiful canvas that showcases the spirit of the Chinatown community.

The Collaboration

We are thrilled to team up with the artists from Non Alien Box. Known for their incredible work in Ross Alley, they bring a deep understanding of our neighborhood's visual language. Together, we are going to turn a cold metal gate into a permanent piece of public art.

The Goal

We are looking to raise $1,000 to cover the baseline costs of high-quality materials and the artist's commission.

The more we raise beyond this goal, the more we can directly support our artists for their labor and vision.
