About Book

音楽は免费にする

Because it's impossible to define, I'm sharing my experience. A "professor" to music fans around the world.
Sakamoto Ryuichi's only autobiography, picking up fragments of memory and piecing them together into a single story, is completely against my nature. However, I'm also interested in how I became the Ryuichi Sakamoto I am today. Ultimately, these memories are connected to who I am, a unique individual in the world. I want to understand why I've chosen this path.
——Ryuichi Sakamoto ☆ Editor's Recommendation◎ This is the only oral autobiography of international music master Ryuichi Sakamoto, a summary of his activities and thoughts from birth to 2008. The book comprehensively describes how he "started on the road to music" and how he "became who he is today", full of his understanding of music and gratitude.
◎Five movements, five stages, listen to how Ryuichi Sakamoto, who frequently comes up with golden sentences, describes his growth in childhood, his fame in his young adulthood, and his reflections in his later years.
◎More than 30 treasured personal photos show the professor’s life journey from childhood to old age, adding a touch of intimacy and privacy to the professor’s self-narration.
☆ Introduction: This is the only autobiography of renowned Japanese music master Ryuichi Sakamoto. It covers Sakamoto's childhood experience with music and composition, and continues with his musical philosophy in recent years.
As a child, Ryuichi Sakamoto first experienced the profound impact of music through a composition he wrote for a kindergarten assignment, "The Bunny Song." In elementary school, he followed the crowd and took up piano and composition, ultimately remaining the only one among his friends to persevere. In middle school, he was a complete "angry young man," boycotting classes and participating in demonstrations. During this time, he even refused to study music. But it was the emptiness brought on by this rejection that made Ryuichi Sakamoto realize how much he truly loved music. He never considered music his life's mission, but it stayed with him throughout his life. He achieved international success with the band YMO, and won an Academy Award, the highest honor in film score, for his score for "The Last Emperor."
Throughout this book, Ryuichi Sakamoto constantly reflects on his own growth and musical creations, hoping to gain a clearer understanding of his present self. Interspersed with over 30 photos of him from different periods of his life, the book showcases the fascinating life journey of this musical master.
☆ Celebrity Recommendation: Half of his works are soundtracks, but they are so compelling in their own right that they can be enjoyed as pure music. Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the greatest composers of our time.
—Billboard Magazine: When it reaches its peak, you'll feel it's almost like reading any profound philosophical treatise, with the same intellectual exploration and meaning, far more than simply expressing emotions, stimulating, or provoking. I've also seen similar sentiments in another book, written by another musician, the one I'm going to talk about today. It's by the renowned Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, called "Music is Freedom."
