Snow-capped mountains have always nurtured all life on earth with their maternal power. Writer Yang Zhijun, born and raised here, fondly reflects on the arduous journeys of his father, mother, and generations of grassland builders, chronicling the profound changes of the high-altitude region and the spiritual journey of grassland herders. The novel possesses a strong sense of crisis facing grassland issues, while also conveying a passion and optimism that truly reflects the efforts of grassland people to address them and build a new grassland. Poetic language creates a unique narrative style, capturing the harshness of grassland life with both a realistic portrayal and a poetic quality. Synopsis: A section chief's father visits the Qinduo grasslands to understand the plight of the herders. He is greeted by Jiaoba Deji, a hereditary tribal leader who has become the commune director. A bold and somewhat self-righteous man, Jiaoba enjoys immense prestige among the herders. Jiaoba arranges for his father to stay in the tent of Sangjie, a former servant. In an accident, Sangjie's wife, Saimao, is swept away by a raging wave while trying to save her father, a Han Chinese public servant. Before returning to the county after his stay, my father brought Sangjie's son, Cairang, who was deaf and mute but highly intelligent, back to Xining for medical treatment. My father was promoted to acting deputy county chief, but this also presented a dilemma: higher-ups demanded the removal of Jiaoba. However, my father understood that herders ignored those who disagreed, and removing Jiaoba would be tantamount to destroying Qinduo. Through careful mediation, Sangjie, now Jiaoba's son-in-law, became the new chief. Jiuba and Sangjie spared no effort, even risking their lives, to support their father's subsequent major initiatives. In a land where education was virtually nonexistent, their father built the first elementary and middle schools from scratch, providing education for the herders' children. During the famine, the Xining Nursery School relocated to the Qinduo grasslands, ensuring food security for the children. As cattle and sheep became overrun, their father established a trading company, persuading herders to sell their livestock to mitigate the impact on their pastures and cultivate a modern understanding of money. After the movement began, their mother, a surgeon at the Provincial People's Hospital, was transferred to the county clinic. After treating her first leprosy patient, she refused to leave him to fend for himself and, despite all odds, built a clinic in Shengbieli Mountain, where leprosy patients were concentrated. Unfortunately, she herself became infected. The younger generation, including Cairang, Jiangyang, Yangjin, and Meiduo, also grew up under the guidance of their parents and grandparents, bravely shouldering the responsibility of development. The grasslands remained fraught with danger. To find a way out, they joined forces to implement a bold and ambitious plan.
