About Book

In the 1990s, young anthropologist Don Kulik journeyed alone to the swampy village of Gapuen, a small village of just 200 people, nestled in the heart of the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, to document the endangered Atayalbo language. Upon arrival, he realized that it was impossible to truly learn the language without understanding the daily lives of its speakers: how they communicated with their children, how they argued, gossiped, and joked. Over the course of three decades, he repeatedly visited the area, staying for periods ranging from a few weeks to over six months at a time, witnessing firsthand the fading of the language and documenting everything he could learn. He also found himself irrevocably immersing himself in the lives and world of the Gapuen villagers, mingling with their joys and sorrows, their fates.
