This work is of immense literary merit, capturing the indescribable pressures faced by humanity in a vast, open landscape. The author demonstrates exceptional rhythmic control, leaving no flaws, leaving a profound impression, filled with beauty, longing, and human suffering. — Columbia Narrative Book Award Ceremony ⚡
When controlling love turns into a violent scene, the beast hidden in the heart reveals its claws:
◇ “I’m pregnant again.” She thought as she tightened the rope around her neck.
——Counterattack!
Treating animals as children because they are unable to reproduce;
strangled a bitch who had betrayed him without any remorse;
Feeding a lover who repeatedly breaks his promise to a jaguar;
The pain that mocks his lover is a punishment from heaven, deserved, and a bargaining chip to tie him down...
◇She chooses to kill those who are about to suffocate her first.
⚡
Written with inspiration from ten years of jungle life: Love and violence are one and the same, and it is completely illogical.
◇Based on the author's experience: settled on the Pacific coast, built a cabin on the cliff with his lover, but eventually left due to domestic violence.
"I lived in the jungles of Colombia's Pacific coast for ten years. When I first arrived, I saw the body of a dog, a female. Three days later, the body was gone, only bones and hair remained, and the only signs of life were vultures perched in the trees and flying around. I thought, this is the most important story here." —Pilar Quintana⚡
It's vigorous and intense, short and concise, full of atmosphere, and you can read it in one breath!
◇A dark and primitive jungle, an isolated and secluded coastline, a repressed and barren life, and people thirsty for desire...
◇It is a rough work that interweaves cruelty and tenderness, and combines storytelling and literary qualities. It is full of tension and highly recognizable.
◇Profound theme × minimalist writing × short length = refreshing Latin American literature!
----------
In a small village deep in the jungle on the coast, Damaris and her husband live a poor life. She desperately wants to have a child, but she has not been able to do so.
One day, Damaris got a little female dog. She took care of it and loved it wholeheartedly, naming it Qili, the name she had originally intended for her daughter. Qili kept running away, worrying Damaris, but she always returned home safe and sound.
Until Damaris's love turned into resentment, until she discovered that Qili was pregnant.
"Female Dog" includes the novella of the same name and five short stories with interconnected characters and interwoven plotlines. Focusing on a group of people trapped by nature, society, and even their inner selves, it explores the true meaning of love in a harsh and oppressive environment. They strangle their "daughter," feed their lover to a jaguar, and mock their lover's illness as deserved... When violence permeates their daily lives and love reveals its claws after repeated setbacks, they suddenly discover that love and violence are one and the same, completely illogical.
-----------
The magic of this short, powerful book is that it talks about so many important things, yet at the same time seems to be talking about completely different things. What are those things? Violence, loneliness, resilience, cruelty. Quintana works wonders with his thought-provoking, serious, and powerful prose. —Juan Gabriel Vázquez (Colombian writer, author of "The Voice of Falling Objects")
This book will change you. It delves into motherhood, cruelty, and the unconquerable nature of nature. Everything is written in an unforgettable way. —Mariana Enriquez (Argentinian writer, author of "Relics in the Fire")
"Bitch" is a work that depicts real violence. Pilar Quintana is an artist who reveals the wounds we often overlook, points out their beauty, and then rubs salt in them. — Yuri Herrera (Mexican writer and political scientist)
This acclaimed novella is unforgettable for its descriptions of the jungle – the countless storms, the insects, the garbage washed up on the beach by the waves. It is a powerful and shocking story about class, motherhood and anger. - The Guardian
