Through the protagonist's recollections, the novel unravels a life's journey before the reader's eyes, while also reflecting on the international political landscape of the extraordinary period between World War I and World War II.
The 1993 film adaptation of the novel of the same name (also known as "The Goodbye, Mr. Love"), starring famous British actors Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, received eight Academy Award nominations and six British Academy Film Award nominations, becoming a classic in film history.
