In Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s, the commodity economy flourished, and literature and art became highly commercialized. A writer with a steadfast artistic conscience struggled with the conflict between ideals and reality. While writing to satisfy his hunger, he also blamed himself and repented, sinking into a compulsive alcoholic...
Written in the early 1960s, The Drunkard pioneered modernism in Hong Kong literature and is hailed as "China's first stream-of-consciousness novel." It was selected as one of the "Top 100 Chinese Novels of the 20th Century" by Asia Weekly. In 2004, it inspired Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai to film 2046, which was then adapted into the 2011 feature film The Drunkard by Hong Kong director Wong Kwok-sho.
The Drunkard has been reprinted numerous times since its publication, and this book uses the original edition published by Hong Kong Haibin Book Company in 1963. In addition to the work itself, the editor has selected relevant critical articles as an appendix to facilitate research, and has provided a large number of annotations to help readers overcome reading difficulties.
