This is the first monograph to explore the art of the medieval periphery from a historical and critical perspective. For medieval people, the periphery was a site of ambiguity, perversion, and transformation, a place where social opposition and psychological conflict played out. Whether it was the irreverent harlequins that often appeared in the margins of prayer books or the mocking gargoyles on church walls, these figures resided outside the conventional center but rather on the margins, nurturing forces that resisted the constraints of medieval society.
Analyzing how religious themes and images on the margins of secular manuscripts obscured, parodied, or otherwise questioned the accuracy of texts, Michael Camille delves into the margins of several major social spaces: monasteries, cathedrals, courts, and cities. By focusing on the ways in which marginality functioned in medieval culture, Camille reveals the complex social concepts of the Middle Ages and the true sources of innovation in marginal art, revealing how this subversive art form sustained hegemonic systems.
